Privacy notice
This site collects one thing: the email address you give it when you subscribe to the newsletter. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from third parties.
Who is responsible
AI in Retail is written and run by Simon Edwards, who is the data controller for the newsletter list. Contact: [email protected].
What is collected when you subscribe
- Your email address, to send you the newsletter.
- The country you signed up from, as a two-letter code supplied by the network that serves the site. Your IP address itself is not stored.
- Dates: when you signed up and when you confirmed.
- A random token tied to your address, which is what makes the confirm and unsubscribe links work.
To stop the form being abused, a one-way hash of the IP address that submits it is kept for up to two hours and then deleted. It cannot be turned back into an IP address and is not linked to your email address.
Why, and on what basis
The only purpose is to send you the newsletter: one plain-text email a month, on the day each Part publishes. The legal basis is your consent, which you give twice: once by entering your address and again by following the link in the confirmation email. Nothing is sent to an address that has not been confirmed.
Your address is never sold, shared, or used for anything else. The owner of the site receives a notification when an address is confirmed or removed.
Where it is kept
The list is held in a database run by Cloudflare, which also hosts the site and delivers the confirmation email. Cloudflare acts as a processor and may process data outside the United Kingdom under its standard contractual safeguards. No other company receives your address.
How long it is kept
- Confirmed subscribers: until you unsubscribe.
- Unconfirmed sign-ups: deleted automatically after 30 days.
- After you unsubscribe: your record is deleted at once. Nothing is retained.
Unsubscribing and your rights
Every issue carries a one-click unsubscribe link. You can also ask for a copy of what is held about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted, by writing to [email protected]. Requests are answered within one month.
If you are unhappy with how your data has been handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Reading the site
Reading the site needs no account and leaves no cookie. Two things are stored in your own browser and never sent anywhere: which section you came from, so the breadcrumb trail matches your route, and the search index when you open search. Both clear when you close the tab or your browser's cache.
Like any web host, Cloudflare processes the IP address of each request in order to serve the page and to protect the site from attack. The site owner does not see or keep those logs.
Changes
If this notice changes, the date at the top changes with it, and anything that affects subscribers is announced in the newsletter first.
